Personal Peace Procedure: Use EFT Tapping to heal your past

One of the aspects of EFT tapping that I love most is how empowering and self-sufficient it is. You can use it on your own, anywhere, at any time.

One powerful example of this is the Personal Peace Procedure, a structured EFT technique designed to help you release emotional pain from the past.

Working on yourself to create a ripple effect

This technique is a way to systematically take away the negative charge of memories and make peace with your own past. When you heal internally, the effects extend far beyond you.

As you reduce emotional triggers and unresolved memories, you naturally show up with more calm, clarity, and compassion.

In this blog, we will cover the key Personal Peace Procedure questions.

What is the Personal Peace Procedure?

It is a method created by EFT tapping founder Gary Craig, for personal ongoing emotional healing.

It is designed to:

  • Release negative emotional charge from past memories

  • Reduce emotional triggers

  • Increase inner calm and resilience

The idea is simple: the fewer unresolved emotional issues we carry, the more peace we experience in daily life.

Not only does it benefit us personally, but it also positively impacts others through a ripple effect - when we feel happy and at peace, we naturally radiate that energy into the world.

What can the Personal Peace Procedure help with?

This EFT tapping peace process can help with any emotions - including but not limited to: anxiety, stress, fear, self-esteem, shame, relationship triggers and many more.

If a memory still carries emotional intensity, this process can help neutralise it. This is about making peace with your past so it no longer controls your present.

How to do the Personal Peace Process EFT (step by step)

This is ongoing emotional healing work. Ideally, it is done regularly to build momentum and create lasting change.

Step 1: Create your list of memories
In your journal, write down events and memories that still feel uncomfortable or emotionally charged.

To get started, you can ask yourself:

  • If you could live life over again, what would I prefer to skip?
  • What I wish it had been different?
  • What do you wish had never happened?
  • What memories still bother me?

Write down anything that comes up, it may be a small moment, an image, a sentence, or a flashback - everything that is made available to you by your mind matters.

Step 2: Give each memory a “movie title”
Treat each event like a short movie and give it a title.
Ask yourself: If this were a movie scene, what would I call it?

For example:
  • The day the teacher corrected me in front of everyone
  • When my friend ignored me
  • Dad looked angry at me in the mall
  • My neighbour didn’t call me for his birthday party

Being specific helps EFT tapping work more effectively.

Step 3: Rate the emotional intensity
Next to each event, think of how much distress it causes you as you think of that memory and give a rating from 0 to 10.
0 is no emotional charge, while 10 is extremely distressing.
This is your Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) score.

Step 4: Use EFT Tapping to reduce the intensity
Tap through the EFT points while focusing on one specific memory at a time. Continue tapping until the intensity reduces to 0 or 1 (neutral or nearly neutral).
When the emotional charge drops, the memory remains - but the pain attached to it is released.

Here’s some blogs to understand what the tapping points are and how to tap

IMPORTANT: If you feel overwhelmed, unsafe, or emotionally flooded, please seek professional assistance and work on your personal peace process with a qualified EFT therapist.

Step 5: Record the new intensity
After tapping, write down the new intensity score. Then move on to the next memory on your list.
Often, when you clear one event, others linked to it automatically reduce in intensity.
This is how deep emotional healing creates lasting change.

Why dedicate time to the Personal Peace Procedure?

Many of us walk through life carrying emotional weight we may not even realise we are holding.

As you clear these stored emotional blocks:

  • You feel lighter

  • Your triggers reduce

  • Your reactions soften

  • Your relationships improve

  • Your nervous system regulates more easily

You’re not only bringing more peace into your own life, but also into the lives of those around you, creating a beautiful healing ripple effect that positively influences your relationships, work, and environment.

Notes

  • Gary Craig originally suggested listing at least 100 specific events to work on. It may sound like a lot at first, but once you begin, you may realise how many memories you’ve been carrying that no longer serve you.

  • This process is most effective as a daily practice, helping you build and maintain momentum. As you clear the emotional charge from one event, you may notice that other related memories also decrease in intensity, as they are often interconnected.

  • The traditional recommendation is to begin tapping on the highest-intensity memories first. However, if that feels overwhelming, you can start with moderately rated events (around 5-6) and build confidence from there.

  • If new memories surface while doing this work, simply write them down and add them to your list. There’s no rush - they can be addressed when you feel ready.
