Blog 4: Why do we focus on the ‘negative’ while tapping?

Tapping on the negative
what is

EFT/tapping is a holistic tool that helps release emotional and physical blocks. The process is based on the acknowledgment and recognition that they exist. That’s the first step for liberation.

Recognising ‘what is’ is an essential part of the release

I first came across the word EFT in a book I was reading during a time when I was devouring everything I could about the mind, mindset, and manifestation.

When I dug deeper into EFT/tapping, I noticed that the process involved focusing on the negative - and that didn’t sit right with me. First, I was looking for something that would make me feel better, not have me repeatedly talking about what wasn’t okay. Second, based on everything I was learning about the Laws of Attraction and Manifestation - from books, podcasts, and other resources - I didn’t want to attract more negativity into my life by giving it more attention.

It didn’t make much sense to me and felt counterintuitive. But I was in a phase of trying everything, and I had nothing to lose. So, I gave it a go. I followed some tap-along videos and tried it on my own - and to my surprise, I felt something shift. Release.

After practicing it for over 6 years, here are some things I now believe.

We're tapping on what is

I realised that we’re not focusing on the negative - we’re focusing on what is. And if that happens to be negative, that’s okay. Repeating it during tapping doesn’t make it any more negative than it already is. In fact, ignoring it is far more damaging than acknowledging and processing it. So rather than saying that tapping focuses on the negative, I prefer to say that tapping focuses on what is.

You're already attracting it

Considering the principles of attraction - we attract what we feel. Not long ago, a client raised the same concern I had years ago: “But if I keep repeating it, won’t I keep attracting it?” To which I replied, “If you’re already feeling it, it’s already within you - you’re already attracting it.”

There are times when simply not feeding an emotion is enough for it to fade. But more often, we carry layers of emotions, beliefs, memories, and unconscious patterns that silently shape our lives. Acknowledging what is - saying out loud what we feel and what exists within us - is like shining a light into those hidden spaces. Only then can we begin to explore, understand, and transform them.

What you resist, persists

You’ve probably heard the quote, “What you resist, persists.” Well, it applies here too. If you’re avoiding stating or exploring something because you’re resisting it, it will continue to persist.

That said, I’m not suggesting you dive headfirst into every memory or emotion you’ve ever held. It’s important to be kind to yourself and remember that healing is a process. EFT/tapping allows you to gently peel back the layers at a pace that feels safe, helping you uncover and release deeper blocks - especially when guided by a professional.

Acceptance is the first step toward real change

Repeating what is helps you accept it - but acceptance doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it. In fact, it’s the opposite. By accepting it, you’re stepping into your inner power and taking the first step toward real change. Acceptance is a prerequisite for transformation.

EFT/tapping supports this process not only by helping you accept in a gentle way but also by engaging your energetic and physiological systems at the same time. This creates a complete, aligned shift in perspective - one that naturally opens the path to your next level.

Know thyself

Tapping on what is isn’t just about release - it’s also a doorway to deeper self-awareness. I’ve lost count of how many times I started tapping on one issue, only for my mind to suddenly reveal something completely unexpected. As we peel back one layer, another often appears, ready to be seen and released.

It’s truly a beautiful process for those willing to take the time to heal and truly know themselves.

Let’s explore what is together

When I was on a quest for deeper understanding, searching for tools that could help me break through my own limitations, little did I know, this simple technique would become one of the most powerful game-changers in my life.

It could be the same for you too! Why not book a free session with me and try it out?
